Civil Union Law Impacts Employers Who Offer Health Coverage

As more states pass legislation allowing same-sex couples to form civil unions, the implications to employers is becoming more and more apparent.  Some areas of concern include not only discrimination policies and tax withholding but medical, dental and vision plans.  If you do not operate within a state that recognizes same-sex civil unions, you may still be affected if you have employees who commute from a state that recognizes civil unions or domestic partnerships.  According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, five states currently have legislation upholding civil unions.  The website also offers a breakdown of the key provisions highlighting same-sex marriage, civil union and domestic partnerships for each state.
